Description
The twenty-fifth edition of Jawetz, Melnick, & Adelberg’s Medical Microbiology remains true to the goals of the first edition published in 1954 “to provide a brief, accurate and up-to-date presentation of those aspects of medical microbiology that are of particular significance to the fields of clinical infections and chemotherapy.” The current edition has some new features that include a change in the format, the addition of color photographs, and an increased number of new and revised review questions at the end of each chapter. All chapters have been revised extensively consistent with the tremendous expansion of medical knowledge afforded by molecular mechanisms, advances in our understanding of microbial pathogenesis and the discovery of novel pathogens.
New also to this edition is Timothy Mietzner, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Mietzner’s extensive expertise in molecular microbial pathogenesis will add significantly to the current and future editions and we welcome his participation.
The change to full color has provided the opportunity to prepare many new photographs and photomicrographs, and their new uniformity has resulted in a distinct benefit in the Bacteriology Section (III). The Gram stains were photographed using the same microscope, camera, and soft ware settings. The pictures were cropped for printing as square images one column wide. The result is that the relative size of the bacteria can be compared from one image to another. Thus, Escherichia coli (Figure 15–1) appear larger than Haemophilus influenzae (Figure 18–1) and Franciscella tularensis (Figure 18–2), much as would be seen when observing the bacteria through the microscope. The authors hope that comparing the relative size of bacteria in photographs will be useful to students of microbiology.
