Description
This sixth edition of Harwood-Nuss’ Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine continues in the tradition of its predecessors as an up-to-date, authoritative, and concise single-volume source that covers essentially all areas of emergency medicine. It serves as a ready reference for the clinician at the bedside, and also as an educational resource for trainees and more experienced emergency medicine practitioners.
Our goal has been to produce an eminently readable book that emphasizes critical thinking in everyday emergency practice. The contributing authors are practicing emergency physicians with years of practical bedside experience, impressive academic qualifications, and wide-ranging expertise in their subjects. As in previous editions, the chapters are clinically focused and practical, not only highlighting traditional teaching and accepted evidence-based practice but also examining what remains controversial or under investigation.
As emergency medicine has changed, so has this book. The table of contents has been revised and many chapters have been completely rewritten to take into account new approaches to many emergency conditions. The most popular and distinctive features of the book, including the Common Pitfalls section and the Critical Interventions summary, have been expanded to include a Key Testing section in almost every chapter.
The entire text is available in an online edition which includes additional text, tables, and figures, as well as a large set of accompanying review questions and answers, now numbering more than 1,200 expertly edited items, which provides an unmatched additional resource for study or review.
Finally, this preface would be incomplete if it did not acknowledge our debt to Dr. Ann Harwood-Nuss, who served as editor-in-chief for the first three editions of this book. Her vision and dedication continue to inspire our efforts.
